2008 was a year of experimentation and risk taking in player development. Previous programs had been one-day demonstrations. With a grant from USTA, WWTA presented the Make-A-Racquet program in Fuquay-Varina (48 participants, Holly Springs (50 participants), and Apex (48 participants). These were public park programs and open to everyone, but a special effort was made to reach out to minority and at-risk children. Each participant received a free racquet and can of balls at the first clinic --all that is needed to play on the public courts used for these lessons. Graduates were offered scholarships in the town’s parks & rectennis program. This program was enthusiastically received by the students, the parents and the parks & recreation program coordinators/managers
